Penningroth, whose groundbreaking book, Before the Movement: The Hidden History of Black Civil Rights, was honored with Scribes’s 2024 Book Award. In this CLE program, Professor Penningroth will explore the fascinating and untold story of how ordinary African Americans used the legal system in the century before the civil rights movement to assert their rights, protect their property, and challenge oppression.
